Alzheimer’s disease and cerebrovascular disease often occur together, suggesting that the two diseases might feed off of each other and accelerate cognitive decline. We have been testing the idea that clots or bleeds in the brain microvasculature could trigger the deposition of A-beta, the primary protein in Alzheimer’s disease. We image blood flow and A-beta in transgenic mice with multiphoton microscopy and induce clots with femtosecond laser ablation. Other interests include developing techniques for in vivo studies of cardiac microcirculation and multiphoton imaging of tumor initiation in the brain.
